The Caspian Sea

The largest lake on the planet, which is called the sea because of its size, is located on the territory of two continents - Europe and Asia. Some claim that humans have lived in these places more than 75 thousand years ago. At different times the Sea-lake was given different names by different tribes and peoples. According to some estimates, their number is close to 70. The most well-known ones are Khvalynskoe and Khazarian Sea.

The area of the Caspian Sea now exceeds 370,000 square km, while its depth reaches 1000 m. Salinity of water reaches 13#% in some places. There are over a hundred species of fish found in the Caspian Sea, including valuable commercial sturgeon fish. However, its capturing in the Caspian States is under moratorium (except in Iran).

Modern Caspian Sea washes the shores of five countries: Kazakhstan, Russia, Iran, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan. Kazakhstan's coastline is the longest - 2320 km. In recent years Aktau, Kazakhstan’s port city on the east coast, (regional center of Mangistau region) is increasing tourism opportunities through the development of infrastructure: laying roads, construction of recreational sites on the coast. Sand beaches, mineral waters and therapeutic mud are the resources that the Caspian Sea possesses, which offer great opportunities for tourism development in the region.
